Clashes at Rajshahi University: Class-Exams Suspended for Two Days

Rajshahi University, one of the largest public universities in Bangladesh, has suspended all classes and exams for two days, on March 12 and 13, following a clash between students and locals. The incident occurred on Saturday (March 11) in Binodpur area, adjacent to the university. According to reports, over 150-200 students were injured in the incident.

The clash reportedly broke out between Rabi students and bus helpers over sitting on bus seats. The situation escalated when a local shopkeeper intervened, leading to a collision between the two. The students of the sociology department gathered at the spot and attacked the shopkeeper. In response, local businessmen formed a coalition and attacked the university students. The situation turned violent, with motorcycles being vandalized and the Binodpur police outpost being set on fire.

University Vice-Chancellor Professor Sultan Ul Islam stated that at least 200 students were injured in the incident, with some of them in critical condition. The injured were sent to Rajshahi Medical College by bus, as ambulance services were unable to cover the large number of injured students.

The University Vice-Chancellor Professor Golam Sabbir Sattar announced the suspension of all classes and exams on Sunday and Monday, in response to the situation. This decision was taken to ensure the safety and security of the students and faculty members.

The incident has once again raised questions about the safety and security of students on university campuses in Bangladesh. The incident at Rajshahi University is not the first of its kind, and similar incidents have occurred at other universities in the country in the recent past.

The authorities concerned must take immediate steps to ensure the safety and security of the students on university campuses. The incidents of violence and clashes should be thoroughly investigated, and those responsible should be held accountable. Only then can we hope to create a safe and conducive environment for students to learn and grow.
